Why Florida Is Different

The Climate Works Against Your Fixtures

Outdoor fixtures anywhere eventually show wear, but in Florida the timeline is compressed. Constant UV exposure bleaches and warps finishes. Salt air from the Gulf corrodes metal hardware and electrical contacts. Humidity works its way into sealed fixtures and causes internal failures that aren't visible from the outside until something stops working.

Fixtures that look fine on the outside can have corroded wiring connections or water-damaged sockets. When we install a new fixture, we inspect the existing junction box, wiring, and weatherproofing — not just swap the fixture itself.

  • UL-listed wet-location fixtures for exposed, rain-direct areas
  • Damp-location rated fixtures for covered porches and soffits
  • Junction box inspection and weatherproofing on every install
  • Proper grounding and weatherproof covers throughout
  • Same-day installation on most standard replacements
  • Coordination on matching finish to existing hardware
What We Install

Sconces, Post Lights & More

Most outdoor fixture installs involve replacing what's already there — a wall sconce by the front door, a post light at the end of a driveway, or a porch fixture that's reached the end of its life. We bring the fixture up to code at the same time, addressing any issues with the junction box or wiring we find along the way.

There are more design styles available today than ever before — traditional, modern, farmhouse, coastal. Modern integrated LED fixtures tend to have sleeker lines. Traditional styles use replaceable bulbs, which some homeowners prefer for long-term flexibility.

Integrated LED vs. traditional bulb fixtures: Integrated LED fixtures have longer lifespans and sleeker designs, but cannot be re-lamped if the LED fails — the whole fixture must be replaced. Traditional fixtures using standard E26 bulbs are easier to maintain. We can help you decide which makes more sense at each location.

Common Locations

Every Exterior Access Point, Covered

Entryway & Front Door

Sconces flanking the front door or a single overhead mount — these get the most attention and handle the most weathering. We match the mounting to what's already there or upgrade the junction box if needed.

Garage & Driveway

Wall-mount fixtures beside garage doors and post lights at driveways take constant sun exposure. We confirm wet-location ratings and weatherproof covers for every install in these exposed areas.

Porch, Patio & Soffit

Covered areas typically call for damp-location rated fixtures rather than wet-location. Ceiling-mount designs and outdoor fans with integrated lights are common here. We confirm the junction box can support the fixture weight.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should outdoor fixtures be replaced in Florida?

It varies by material and exposure. Resin, powder-coated aluminum, and stainless steel hold up best in Florida's climate. Cheaper painted steel and fixtures with exposed incandescent bulbs tend to show visible wear in 3–5 years in direct sun. If a fixture is corroding, discoloring, or flickering without a bulb issue, it's usually time for a replacement.

What's the difference between wet-location and damp-location fixtures?

Wet-location fixtures are rated for direct rain exposure — open eaves, columns, or any spot where rain falls directly on the fixture. Damp-location fixtures are for covered areas that see humidity but not direct rain, like a porch ceiling or soffit. Using damp-location in a wet-location area is a code violation and a safety concern.

Can I bring my own fixture for you to install?

Yes. If you've purchased a fixture you'd like installed, we can do that. We just ask that it be rated for outdoor use at the specific location (wet vs. damp). We'll let you know upfront if there's anything about the fixture or the existing box that needs attention before we start.

What if the fixture I want uses a different mounting pattern than what's there?

Most outdoor fixtures mount to a standard round junction box, so swapping styles isn't usually an issue. If the new fixture is heavier than the old one, we may need to upgrade to a fan-rated or weight-rated box. We'll check and let you know before work starts.

Can you install a smart or motion-sensing outdoor fixture?

Yes. Many smart fixtures and motion-sensing lights use standard wiring. If the existing switch leg doesn't have a neutral wire, some smart fixtures may require a different model or a small workaround. We'll confirm what works at your location before recommending a fixture or proceeding with the install.
